Join us at the Migration Museum for an easy and joyous movement workshop, led by the Spanish choreographer Neus Gil Cortés – invited by the artist Isabel Castro Jung. 

Dedicated to NHS workers and other carers, this workshop is open to all, and offers participants room to express their ideas about the meaning of connection and care. This will be a relaxed workshop in which movement is used in a playful way to invite us to think about connection when it comes to caring for one another. The workshop is open to people of any ability and parents with their children are welcome!

About the artists

Isabel Castro Jung is a sculptor and performance artist. Her work explores how personal conditions can be materialized into an object, developing narratives around migration, heritage, gender and its influence on identity and belonging. Materials include textiles, rubber, and ceramics, as well as repurposed and recycled garments and other objects. Her sculptures transform the performer into a hybrid being, activating the body as a vehicle for learning and experience, and challenging our views on the society and world in which we live.

Castro Jung has worked on solo projects and collaboratively with visual artists, performers, dancers, choreographers and musicians in Spain, Germany and the UK. Current projects include ´Covijo-99´, a pandemic diary series of 99 artistic face masks, some of which is on display at the Migration Museum as part of the exhibition Heart of the Nation: Migration and the Making of the NHS, on until 27th July.

Neus Gil Cortés’ choreographic work exists in the meeting of cultures, places and backgrounds. Her pieces are collaborative processes in which the artist’s lived experiences as an immigrant feed concepts that question relational hierarchies and assumptions that we fall into both on and off stage. With a focus on increasing the diversity of bodies and life experiences of those on stage as a first step to diversifying audiences, Neus regularly works with a team of Deaf and hearing video and dance artists from different backgrounds. Since the success of NOISE film (BBC) and live performance (currently touring the UK), her pieces offer different accessibility options for Deaf audiences embedded from the beginning as part of the artistic process.

As a professional dancer (2006-2016) Neus worked with companies such as Hofesh Shechter and National Dance Company Wales in the UK, and Dance Works Rotterdam in Holland. She created her own company, Nua Dance in 2015 and currently works as a choreographer, dramaturg and educator. Her work feeds from dance, circus and visual arts and has been performed in Spain, Italy, USA, Holland and the UK.
