I am delighted by the very idea of a Museum of Migration because I think we are far too reluctant to celebrate the stories and the journeys and the contributions of those who comprise modern Britain. They are a source of strength and should be a source of pride. Their stories should also be a source of inspiration to successive.

Hugh Muir is a writer and columnist on the Guardian. He writes the ‘Diary’ and a weekly column, ‘Hideously Diverse Britain’. He has previously worked for the BBC – as a community affairs correspondent – and for the Evening Standard, the Daily Telegraph and the Mail on Sunday. He was the inaugural winner of the Race In The Media Award and writes extensively on race, policing and home affairs issues.
