Migration Museum to open a community space co-created with local people – get involved
Please note: the application deadline for our community curator roles has now passed and we are no longer accepting new applications. Thank you to everyone who has submitted applications for this role. We are currently reviewing applications and will be in touch as soon as possible.
The Migration Museum is opening a new creative community space for people to relax, reflect, showcase artwork, and make opportunities to focus on professional development, innovation and make stronger connections. The space will showcase the museum’s community engagement values (pg 6+7), celebrate diversity, share stories, and platform the creativity of Lewisham’s communities.
We are seeking 3-4 community curators to shape the creative programming of this space in 2024.
The curators will support the museum in hosting captivating exhibits that feature people who live and create locally, narrating the diverse journeys and experiences of the people in and around the borough. The community curators will be required to work collaboratively to create and carry forward the vision for the space.
The initial opening of the community space will coincide with the re-opening of the Migration Museum and launch of our Heart of the Nation exhibition in March 2024. The community curators will then work with the Migration Museum to host exhibitions in the space from September 2024, coinciding with the launch of All Our Stories, a new exhibition from the Migration Museum (more details TBA).
As the Migration Museum continues the mission to explore how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are – as individuals, families, communities, and nations – we will offer this community space in our current home, along with our existing engaging and interactive exhibitions, dynamic events and a far-reaching education programme for primary, secondary, university and adult learners.
The community curator roles are open to those with a connection to London Borough of Lewisham and previous curatorial experience is not required. Those selected will receive on-site training in curation, as well as guided site visits at other local museums and cultural institutions based on the interests of the cohort of curators. We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone with lived experience of migration and/or under the age of 25.
If you’re interested in joining the Migration Museum team as a Community Curator, please review the job description, and complete the application form by 23:59 on 14th January 2024.
